The heart and the mind what does it mean biblically? The heart is the whole innermost part of the human. Culturally It is told that the heart is used to express the emotions. The culture divides people as having two parts, one is the emotions the heart, and the brain which houses the mind. The bible does not divide. It tells all three makes up the whole human being – biblically this is called the heart. The heart is the inner part of man made up of three parts. The mental process leads the person, this is the major part. The emotions is the icing on the cake it processes the reactions. The will is the decision maker. The heart is the divine influencer. the heart represents the true character but conceals it. this is the seat of the moral nature. The griefs, perceptions, the thoughts, the understandings, the intentions, the purposes, the reasoning.
The heart and the mind are closely connected, the heart being the seat of the mind (Matthew 13:15). As a man thinks in his heart so is he (Proverbs 23:7). According to the bible, every function of man is attributed to the heart: The emotions, the thought, the will. The creative thought as well as wicked devices originate from the heart. Wisdom and understanding have a seat in the heart. The heart is the determination of the mind. and give the responses of the emotions. We must not be led by our emotions, but we must renew our minds. It is with our minds that we need to take in consideration what we focus on. This is what we will be held accountable for. The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, because man is a fallen creature, subject to sin but it is also with our heart we exercise faith. When our emotions come into play, we must become cautious that the emotions do not become the sole determinant when it comes to the decision making in our daily life.
There is a battle raging around us twenty-four hours in a day. It is the battle of the mind, and that battle can be violent, vicious, even intense. The invisible war is unfair, but it becomes intense because your greatest asset is in the mind. Whatever gets a hold of your mind gets you. So, the most important thing we need to do is learn how to strengthen, and guard, our mind and heart. Because the battle rages in the mind after the heart makes a decision. We must take down the mental block, whatever strong hold that has taken the thoughts captive. We must win the battle over the stronghold. A stronghold can be something in the worldview, such as materialism. Or it can be personal, such as guilt or resentment. These things can become strong in the mind, and we need to tear them down. We need to take every thought captive. Make it submit, bring it under control, we need to take It captive and not the other way around.
But how do we do that, you ask? How do we make our mind behave? Sometimes it won’t obey, sometimes it is rebellious. When you want to think one way, it goes in another direction. When You want to ponder it wants to be curious. The thought wants to fly away when you are trying to put the pieces together. Paul tells us in Romans 7, that he did not do the good thing. What he wanted to do, he didn’t do. Paul did the thing he didn’t want to do. We must learn how to fight the battle that is raging in our minds. There are four simple principles to help with the strengthening, renewing, submitting, and bringing every thought into captivity. (1) Don’t believe everything you think. Just because you think something does not make it true. Many suggestions can come in our minds that are not true. then we become confused, evil, restless, rash, or deluded to name a few.
This makes the mind then become trouble, depraved, sinful, blinded, and corrupt. When our minds have become mentally broken, we start to deceive our own selves. We think that things aren’t as bad as they really are, we think that we are doing okay when we are not. we think itis no big deal, when it is. We lie to ourselves, and remember the bible tells that, “Satan is the father of lies” (John 8:44). We need to stop and think. We need to look at the situation and not make a snap decision. We must look at the important details. Stop jumping to conclusions behind what we want to see. The thoughts are telling you what you are seeing. Don’t believe everything you think, take an inventory of the thought first.
(2) Guard your mind and heart. Do not let the trash come in and clutter up your mind. What you allow in your mind it will come out in your life. The things that are not necessary throw it out with the trash. Fill your mind with the good things, fix your mind on the right things. God expects not only faithfulness, but also fruitfulness. Jesus cursed a fig tree because it didn’t bear fruit. This is how important fruitfulness is. Don’t allow anything into your mind and heart that will corrupt it. Paul tells us to think on things that are “true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, if there is any excellence, anything worthy of praise.” If you pray as much as you worry, you will have a lot less to worry about. Worry less and pray more.
